Vivace is Motiv8’s first app.  This first version is focused on helping you be more physically active, and it contains the first set of different strategies that have already been clinically proven to be effective.  Our goal is to learn which strategies work best for which individuals, based on what makes you unique. Over time we’ll be adding more capabilities – more behaviors (such as healthy eating), more strategies, and more intelligence.

Our mission at Motiv8 is to help people make changes in their lives that improve their health. We know that nothing works for everyone – behavior change is an intensely personal journey. We believe we can help choose and deliver the best approach to changing behavior based on what makes each of us unique. We call our approach “Precision Behavior Change”.

The goal of our 8-week My Steps 2 Health research program is to understand how each of 3 different (already validated) approaches to behavior change differs in impact depending on people’s individual traits. If you are interested in learning more, click here.

Vivace is a musical term (tempo marking) meaning “a lively and brisk manner”.  We think it’s a good way to describe the support Vivace will give you in your goal to be more active.

Vivace is designed to help you increase your physical activity as measured by how much you walk (daily step counts).  This first release contains 3 proven strategies for helping you be more active, but you’ll only experience one at a time.  If you’re part of the “My Steps 2 Health” program, you’ll be randomly assigned to one; if not, you’ll choose from 2 of them.

Vivace will show you different charts, graphs, reports, and push notifications depending on which strategy you’re using.  You can see how you’re doing throughout the day, as well as track your progress on a daily or weekly basis.

Vivace gets your step count data from Apple HealthKit.  Your steps will be counted using the built-in step counter in your iPhone, as well as any fitness tracking device that works with HealthKit.

This first version of Vivace is all about step counts and brisk walking. Your iPhone will recognize your steps as long as you have your phone with you while you walk. If you have an external activity tracker that syncs with Apple HealthKit, then any walking you do without your phone will be counted by Vivace after the next time you sync your tracker with your phone. Some activity trackers are able to recognize and track additional physical activity (such as swimming or biking) but this first release of Vivace will only look for step counts recorded by your fitness tracker. We’ll prioritize our features based on user input – so if you have a favorite activity that we aren’t able to track, let us know!

Vivace will work with any step counter that supports Apple HealthKit. The Motiv8 team has tested Vivace with Apple Watch, Withings, and Jawbone; there are many other devices that work with HealthKit that should work with Vivace. Unfortunately, since Fitbit does not support Apple HealthKit, Vivace isn’t able to read your activity from Fitbit.

Vivace gets all of its step count data from Apple Health, so to sync steps from your wearable you need to sync your wearable’s step count data with Apple Health. For most wearables this means opening the companion app for the wearable, making sure bluetooth on your iPhone is turned on, and then letting the wearable’s app sync its data with Apple HealthKit. You should try to do this at least once a day (and definitely before you go to bed) so that your steps from the day get recorded in Vivace for that day – this is important if you are enrolled in the “Goals and Planning” program and it’s a goal day for you, or if you are enrolled in the “Challenges” program and you’re signed up for a challenge.

The timeline view is a summary of all your daily activity. Light green bars are for regular walking steps (step counts and minutes of walking), and dark green are for brisk walking. The red lines are inactive times, with total consecutive minutes of sedentary time marked in red to the left.

You can scroll up and down to see your stats for other times of the day. You can scroll to different days using the arrows left and right of the date at the top.

Most of the physical activity guidelines refer to 150 minutes a week of “moderate-to-vigorous” physical activity. The easiest way to think of this is a “brisk walk” – walking at a pace of 100 steps per minute or faster, for at least 10 minutes in a row.

Vivace notices when you’ve been inactive for 5 minutes or more, as measured by your phone (or your wearable step tracker). Remember – the most recent physical activity guidelines recommend breaking up your periods of inactivity by standing up and stretching, or taking a short walk – even just to get a drink of water. Remember to carry your phone with you as you move so Vivace knows you’ve moved!

We are NOT tracking or using your actual location. We need a way to “wake up” Vivace so that it can upload your most recent step counts to the server. Apple iOS silently terminates apps running in the background, and one f the only consistent ways to re-activate an app is to have iOS notice if you’ve moved more than 30 meters. Giving Vivace “Always” permission for Location Services enables this.

It’s true that leaving location services on will use more battery than not, but we haven’t noticed a big difference in our testing or from our users. Many people have found that turning “Low Power” on makes a big difference in saving battery – most of your battery drain actually comes from apps uploading or downloading data.
